500GB 750GB 1TB 2TB 3TB 4TB 6TB 8TB 10TB 12TB Click on an added drive again to remove it from the chassis -- This tool calculates drive utilization via RAID formulas. In standard and traditional RAID, using a mix of drive sizes can result in unused space. NETGEAR ReadyNAS feature X-RAID®, a technology which automatically utilizes all unused space which can be made redundant regardless to the mix of drives used. NETGEAR Flex-RAID® offers a variaty of expansion options, including the ability to create an encrypted volume. This tool is not a volume space simulator, so it will not calculate expansions. This tool assumes a factory defaulted state for each drive configuration. Compare the results in the top RAID calculations with the bottom RAID calculations, to see the benefit of one configuration to another. The RAID Calculator will give you an estimate of how drives will be utilized in different RAID levels, actual utilization may vary. This calculator only gives an approximation, it accounts for raid overhead and also the OS and swap partitions, however it does not account for filesystem overhead or snapshots. The RAID Calculator assumes a default configuration with no previous expansions. -- Drive sizes, Protection size, and Unused size are represented in base 10 units, where 1 KB = 1000 Bytes. Where as the results are represented in both base 10 and in base 2 units where, 1 KiB = 1024 Bytes, as seen in the user interface. -- X-RAID® with Single Disk Redundancy and Flex-RAID® RAID 5 work with a minimum of 1 drive. However X-RAID® Dual Redundancy and Flex-RAID® RAID 6 require at least 4 drives -- With Flex-RAID® RAID 10 it is best to have an even number of drives. If there are variable sized drives, it is also best to have an even number of drives for each drive size. Although the calculations work with odd number of drives, actual results may vary. -- With Flex-RAID® RAID 10 it is best to have an even number of drives. X-RAID® dynamically changes raid RAID1 for 1 - 2 drives. RAID5 for 3 - 6 drives. RAID6 for 7+ drives. FLEX-RAID® maintains the RAID type. Minimum drive requirements: RAID 0 requires 1 drive. RAID 1 requires 2 drives (but will work with 1). RAID 5 requires 3 drives (but will work with 2 drives), however X-RAID will work with 1 or 2 drives as it will make a RAID 0 and convert the raids efficiently to provide single disk redundancy. RAID 6 requires 4 drives (but will work with 2 drives). RAID 10 requires 4 drives. -- The ReadyNAS OS6 supports Flex-RAID® RAID 50 and RAID 60. However, this calculator doesn't support those calculations.
